Grate Make Films is a full-service production house in Kampala. Since 2009 we have written, shot and finished corporate films, television commercials and documentaries, with one crew carrying each job from the first script to the delivered master.

01 — The story

From the stage to the boardroom.

We learnt our craft on music videos, where a film has three minutes to earn attention. That discipline now runs through every commercial, corporate film and documentary we make.

  1. 2009

    A camera, a crew and Uganda's music scene

    Grate Make Films opens in Kampala making music videos for the artists who would define the decade. The work travels fast, and so does the name.

  2. Awards

    Nine awards, and a studio of our own

    Recognition for music videos and documentaries funds our own cameras, lighting, grip and a sound-treated studio in Makindye. We stop renting and start building.

  3. Brands

    Brands, broadcasters and development partners

    Hima Cement, Hariss International, the International Labour Organisation and others bring us commercials, corporate films and impact documentaries. The craft is the same. The stakes are higher.

  4. Today

    One team, from brief to broadcast

    Sixteen years in, we script, shoot, grade, mix and deliver in-house, with every cutdown a media plan needs. More than half a million people follow how we do it on our own channels.

    We do not take the easy route. A commercial gets an idea, not just a product shot. A corporate film gets a story, not a tour.

    Every project is a partnership. The producer who takes your brief is on set and in the edit suite, and answers the phone after delivery.

    Documentaries that speak honestly about the people in them. Commercials that make claims your legal team can sign off.

    From pre-production to the final grade and mix, broadcast standard is the floor. Every master is checked before it leaves the building.

    Empowering Uganda

    We hire and train local crew, publish how our films are made, and set the benchmark for East African production.

Half a million people watch how we make films.

We publish behind-the-scenes films from our productions to an audience of more than 500,000 across YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. For a client it is a second campaign that runs for free. For the next generation of Ugandan filmmakers it is a classroom.
